The President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, has announced that he was in favour of the recently-voted new December 1st annual public holiday honoring Kazakhstan's first president, as "many countries recognize such a holiday".

Last week (11-Dec-2011), the Kazakh Senate adopted an amendment to the Kazakh law On holidays in the Republic of Kazakhstan to establish a new annual state non-working public holiday, the Day of the First President of Kazakhstan on December 1st. At that time, the final step is for this bill to become law was to be signed into law by President Nazarbayev, something that now seems to have become a virtual certainty.

As this new holiday falls on a Saturday, next year, and as per the 2001 amendment to the law on public holidays of Kazakhstan (14-Dec-2001), a day in lieu would automatically be given on Monday, December 3, 2012.

The last time new annual public holiday were added to the law On holidays in the Republic of Kazakhstan was in 2008 and 2005 when the non-working public holidays for The Day of the Capital, Orthodox Christmas and Kurban Ait (the Feast of Sacrifice) were added to the list of official annual non-working public holidays in Kazakhstan (26-Jun-2008, 28-Dec-2005 and 02-Jan-2006).
