Kenya's WPF Promises June 25 Public Holiday Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (Nairobi) The party leader of Kenya's Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF), Kalonzo Musyoka, has promised to declare June 25 as a new public holiday if his administration takes office after the 2027 General Election. As per the aforementioned announcement, "the day would serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by Gen Z activists who have been at the forefront of demanding accountability and change". Recall that, in early June of this year, Kenyan Government Spokesperson, Isaac Mwaura, had dismissed the suggestion that the government of President Ruto declare a public holiday on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, to commemorate the Gen Z victims of last year’s anti-Finance Bill protests. At the time, the proposed June 25 public holiday had already been led by a political alliance led by WPF Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, and former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i.

Lesotho To Repeal 1995 Public Holidays Legislation Government of Lesotho (Maseru) The Parliament of Lesotho is in the process of amending the Public Holidays Act of 1995 with the introduction of the Public Holidays Bill 2025. As per the statement of object and reasons which preceded its first reading on 14th February, 2025, "The purpose of the Bill is to repeal the Public Holidays Act, 1995. The Bill proposes for days to be observed as public holidays and has included the public holidays which were not provided for in the repealed Act. These are His Majesty King’s birthday which is on the 17th July, Boxing day which is on the 26th December and the National Tree Planting day which is on the 21st March" and "In order to ensure that the public as a whole, workers included, is accorded undisturbed enjoyment and observance of public holidays as provided for in the Public Holidays Bill, a holiday that falls on a Saturday, or Sunday shall be observed on a Monday. If that Monday is also a public holiday then the holiday shall be observed on a day which follows that Monday". It would seem that, last spring's surprise May 26 day in lieu public holiday was in anticipation of the Public Holidays Bill 2025 soon coming into force. Recall that, on May 20, the Government of Lesotho published the Public Holiday (Appointment) Notice, 2025 whose single paragraph read "I, King Letsie III, pursuant to section 3 of the Public Holidays Act, 1995 1 and acting in accordance with the advice of the Minister responsible for home affairs, appoint the 26th May, 2025 to be observed as a Public Holiday".

Slovakian Bishops Conference Suggests Public Holiday Cancellation Alternatives Ministerstvo zahranicných vecí Slovenskej republiky (Bratislava) The Slovak Bishops Conference (KBS) has proposed alternatives to the government's current plan to cancel the January 6 Epiphany public holiday, beginning in 2026. In its statement to the media, the KBS proposed, as alternatives, St. Cyril and Methodius (July 5) or the Catholic feast day of Our Lady of Sorrows (September 15), all the while stressing that it expected the pending legislation to define unambiguously the term temporary exemption as it relates to the Treaty between the Slovak Republic and the Holy See (Vatican) on religious public holidays. While the budgetary package had its second reading last week, the government's coalition parties have not yet finalized the list of public holidays to be canceled. For the moment they have agreed on the cancellation of November 17 (the Velvet Revolution Anniversary), beginning this year, as well as May 8 (WWII Victory Day), beginning in 2026. The Epiphany, on January 6, is currently slated as the third canceled public holiday, but September 15 remains an option. A couple of weeks ago, the KBS had announced that it would welcome an open dialogue regarding the government's plan to suspend the January 6 public holiday for Epiphany, taking into account the international agreement between Slovakia and the Holy See That initial statement by the KBS was in response to the September 10 budget proposed by Slovakia's Finance Minister, Ladislav Kamenický (Smer-SD), which would see the temporary cancellation of 2 additional public holidays, namely Epiphany on January 6 and Liberation of the Republic Day on May 8th. In 2012, when Portugal considered canceling 4 annual public holidays for a period of 5 years, 2 of which being religious public holidays, the government of Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho depended on the approbation of the Vatican, and there was some back and forth as the choice of which second half of the year public holiday to cancel, as the Vatican and the local Portuguese Church differed. In the end, the 4 canceled public holidays were Corpo de Deus (Corpus Cristi), Implantação da República (October 5), Todos os Santos (November 1), and Restauração da independência (December 1st). These were to be canceled for 5 years (2013-2017) and were restored by the 2016 "Projeto de Lei n.º 749/XII - Restitui os feriados nacionais obrigatórios eliminados".

Slovakia's President Weighs-in On Public Holidays Cancellation Ministerstvo zahranicných vecí Slovenskej republiky (Bratislava) Slovakia's President, Peter Pellegrini, has called on the government to avoid dividing public holidays into religious and non-religious categories, while debating the possible cancellation of 2 additional public holidays. In his remarks, President Pellegrini stressed that any proposed cancellation of public holidays should be temporary and subject to future re-evaluation. Recall that, in early June, Slovakia's Prime Minister, Robert Fico, had announced that one lay public holiday and one religious public holiday could be canceled as part of the ongoing consolidation of Slovak public finances. A few days later, as a first step, his coalition government agreed to cancel the annual November 17 Day of the Struggle for Freedom and Democracy public holiday, effective in 2025, while adding that "the government is open to discussing a similar measure for one additional public holiday, starting in 2026". Today's remarks by President Pellegrini seem to be in direct response to the September 10 budget proposed by Slovakia's Finance Minister, Ladislav Kamenický (Smer-SD), which would see the temporary cancellation of 2 additional public holidays, namely Epiphany on January 6 and Liberation of the Republic Day on May 8th. In May 2012, the same Prime Minister of Slovakia, as today, Robert Fico, echoed a call from the Chairman and Speaker of Slovakia's Parliament, Richard Sulik, to cancel the September 1st public holiday, and in December 2023, the Parliament of Slovakia approved the cancellation of the September 1st, Constitution Day annual public holiday, beginning in 2024.
