The interim ruling National Transitional Council has ordered that December 24 be restored as an annual non-working public holiday in Libya, to mark Independence Day, effective immediately.
Former King Idris al-Sanusi, declared Libyan independence on On December 24, 1951, but this public holiday was cancelled for all 42 years of the rule of former leader Muammar Gadhafi.
Still no mention was made of the recent announcement (05-Sep-2011) by the chairman of the National Transitional Council, Mustapha Abdel Jalil, that the NTC planned to soon declare a new annual Martyrs' Day public holiday.
