Paraguay's Senate Approves 3-Day May Public Holidays

(Posted on Friday, April 29, 2011)

Late last night, Paraguay's Senate approved a further modified version of the extended bicentennial public holidays request made earlier this month by the Comisión Nacional del Bicentenario.

The bill as passed by the Senate now goes to the lower house of Parliament for approval or further amendments.

The version of the multi-day bicentennial public holidays approved by the Paraguayan Senate, last night, would declare as public holidays the period from Saturday, May 14, until Monday, May 16, 2011, inclusively. The Senate vote is a return to the original intention (11-Mar-2011) of the Government of Paraguay to declare a single public holiday, either on Friday, May 13, or Monday, May 16, 2011, to coincide with Paraguay's independence bicentennial.

Later (13-Apr-2011), the bicentennial commission suggested declaring bicentennial public holidays that would run from Friday, May 13, until Monday, May 16, 2011, inclusively. The bill that was then sent to the Senate would have declared bicentennial public holidays that would run from Thursday, May 12, until Sunday, May 15, 2011, inclusively, instead.
