The Representative of the Portuguese Republic for the Autonomous Region of Madeira, Ireneu Barreto, has announced plans to declare August 15 an annual regional public holiday, should the national government proceed with its plan to cancel the August 15 public holiday at the national level.
In the aforementioned statement, the judge councillor stated that, should the annual August 15 public holiday cease to be a national public holiday in Portugal, then he felt that the regional assembly of Madeira had the power to declare a regional public holiday (Se o 15 de agosto deixar de ser feriado nacional, a Assembleia Legislativa da Madeira (ALM) tem a possibilidade de criar um feriado regional).
The issue came to the fore following the recent announcement by the Portuguese Government of the list of annual public holidays that it plans to cancel as part of the current austerity plan (01-Dec-2011). In that announcement, the 4 canceled Portuguese public holidays were listed as: Corpo de Deus (Corpus Cristi), Assunção de Nossa Senhora (August 15), Implantação da República (October 5), and Restauração da independência (December 1st).
Recall that 2 secular and 2 religious non-working public holidays would be removed from the official list of Portuguese non-working public holidays, as part of the current public holidays revision (14-Nov-2011 and 15-Oct-2011), itself a variant of a plan floated last summer (03-Jul-2011).
