South African Presidential Spokesman, Thabo Masebe has announced that Acting President, Kgalema Motlanthe, based on section 2A of the Public Holidays Act, had declared a one-off additional non-working public holiday throughout the Republic for Tuesday, December 27, 2011.
Earlier this week (13-Dec-2011), the general secretary of the Federation of Unions of South Africa (Fedusa), Dennis George, had asked South African President, Jacob Zuma, to declare a one-off additional non-working public holiday on Tuesday, December 27, 2011. The aforementioned announcement was made by Acting President Kgalema Motlanthe as South African President, Jacob Zuma, is currently traveling abroad.
Note that declaration of a one-off additional non-working public holiday on Tuesday, December 27, 2011, was by no means a foregone conclusion. For example, in 2005, under similar circumstances (14-Oct-2005), South Africa's Home Affairs Ministry finally had to issue a statement specifying that December 27, 2005, would not be a public holiday to quash speculation that an additional day in lieu public holiday would be declared to compensate the fact that Christmas Day 2005 would be a Sunday, and that the next Monday, December 26, was already an official public holiday in South Africa.
