Earlier today, the Cabinet of the government of Thailand approved the suggested declaration of 5-day public holidays, from Thursday to Monday October 27 to 31, 2011, to allow Bangkok residents to handle the flood situation during the upcoming weekend high tide period.
Yesterday (24-Oct-2011), the Governor of Bangkok, Sukhumbhand Paribatra, had announced that the period from October 28-31, 2011, could be declared as non-working public holidays at today's Cabinet meeting.
Earlier this month (10-Oct-2011), Thailand's Ministry of Tourism and Sports had similarly proposed declaring October 12-14 as non-working public holidays, but that proposal was rejected at the subsequent Cabinet meeting (11-Oct-2011).
The aforementioned public holidays will apply to Bangkok and to 20 other provinces, mostly located in central Thailand.
The Bank of Thailand has not yet announced if it will follow the Government of Thailand's and also declare 5 days of bank holidays for all of Thailand's banks and financial institutions. The question is not moot, as the Bank of Thailand has, on past occasions, not followed the declaration of public holidays with corresponding declarations of bank holidays (16-May-2010, 14-Apr-2009, and 08-Aug-2007).
In a later announcement, the Bank of Thailand annouced that it would not declare any special bank holiday during the period of Thursday to Monday October 27 to 31, 2011, "to ensure the smooth continuation of economic activities".
