The Ugandan Electoral Commission has announced that the Government of Uganda had finally agreed to declare Wednesday, February 23, 2011, as a one-off public holiday to allow Ugandans to participate in the mayoral and the local government elections countrywide.
The declaration of this one-off, February 23, 2011, public holiday was made by the Second Deputy Prime minister and Minister for Public service, Henry Kajura Muganwa.
Last week (15-Feb-2011), the Government of Uganda had also announced that Friday, February 18, 2011, the date of the upcoming general elections, would be a public holiday in Uganda "to enable Ugandans elect their leaders".
Uganda's elections are often accompanied by a one-off public holiday (05-Mar-2006, 20-Feb-2006, 31-Jan-2006, 09-Mar-2001, and 25-Jun-2001).
