On January 31, Estonia's Parliamentary Constitutional Committee will be examining a proposal to add Russian Orthodox Christmas as a new annual non-working public holiday in Estonia.
Commenting on the aforementioned proposal, the president of the Estonian Multicultural Association (EMA), Aleksandr Apolinsky, observed that 30% of the Estonian pupulation observe Orthodox Christmas.
Another public holidays bill is currently in the pipeline (17-May-2011), one which would make Easter Monday a non-working public holiday in Estonia, beginning in 2012.
The last time the list of Estonian non-working public holidays (27-Jan-1998) was modified was in 2005, when Estonia's parliament approved the Public and National Holidays Act, § 2 and § Work and Rest Law Amendment Act 25 (RT I 2005, 24, 185) which declared December 24 as a new annual public holiday (15-Apr-2005).
