French EELV presidential candidate, Eva Joly, has promised to declare Yom Kippur and the Feast of Sacrifice as non-working public holidays in France if she is elected President of France on May 6, 2012.
Mrs. Joly was a high profile juge d'instruction in the 1990's (the French juge d'instruction, despite its misleading name, corresponds to the first half of a prosecutor's function, the part involved with deciding whether to prosecute or not). She was selected as the EELV presidential candidate last year, but according to all opinion polls, she stands no chance of being elected.
More than likely, if a change to French public holidays is to occur, it will be along the lines of the conversion of another public holiday into a working public holiday to finance long-term dependency of the elderly population, an idea that the French government had floated last spring (05-Apr-2011).
