In his New Year's address, Gibraltar's recently-elected Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo, announced that the rules governing the date when the May Day public holiday is observed as a non-working bank holiday in Gibraltar, would once gain be changed, effective immediately.
Recall that, shortly after taking office (10-Nov-2006 and 09-Nov-2006), the administration of former Chief Minister, Peter Caruana, had changed the rules governing the date when the May Day public holiday is observed as a non-working bank holiday in Gibraltar, to bring them in line with those of the UK, where the first Monday in May is a non-working bank holiday.
In his New Year's address, Chief Minister Picardo, stated that he would revert to the observance of Labour Day on May 1st ("this year and every year that we are in government, the 1st of May will be a bank holiday") as had been requested by Gibraltar unions over the years (29-Apr-2008).
The Chief Minister further added that he would abide by his party's general election manifesto and create a new annual non-working public holiday, "Workers Memorial Day", based on April 28, with a corresponding bank holiday on the nearest Monday, specifying that "This year that means that Monday the 30th April will be a bank holiday".
What is not clear yet is whether a day in lieu public holiday will be given when May 1st falls on a Saturday or Sunday, and additionally what will happen when the new "Workers Memorial Day" coincides with May 1st (as it will in 2017).
