Jamaican August 17 Public Holiday Update

(Posted on Friday, August 17, 2012)

Source: Jamaica Information Service (JIS)

The Government of Jamaica has finally declared August 17 as Marcus Garvey Day in honour of the nation's first National Hero.

Recall that, a year ago (18-Aug-2011), former Jamaican Senator, Barbara Makeda Blake-Hannah, had called for the declaration of Friday, August 17, 2012, as a one-off official non-working public holiday in Jamaica, in part to mark the 50th anniversary of Jamaican Independence, and in part for the 125th birthday of Marcus Mosiah Garvey.

As per the aforemetioned proclamation, issued this morning, August 17 has been declared as Marcus Garvey Day, in honour of the nation's first National Hero, a date to be observed annually, but the proclamation goes on to specify that it "shall not be a public holiday".
