The Government of New Zealand has announced that the declaration of a one-off public holiday to commemorate the first anniversary of the February 22, 2011, Christchurch earthquake, was not under consideration.
As per the aforementioned announcement by a spokesman for duty minister, Tony Ryall, no consideration has been given to the issue and it is not on the agenda of the upcoming Cabinet meeting on January 25th.
Recall that, last year (10-Mar-2011), the Canterbury Earthquake Commemoration Bill was approved in New Zealand's Parliament, officializing the recently-announced (07-Mar-2011 and 03-Mar-2011) March 18 regional public holiday on Friday, March 18, 2011, on the date of the national memorial service honoring the victims of the February 22, 2011, Christchurch earthquake.
