The Office of the Secretary of Papua New Guinea's National Executive Council has announced that Monday, August 27, 2012, would be observed as a one-off non-working public holiday in Papua New Guinea, to mark the newly declared National Covenant Day public holiday.
The National Day of Repentance used to be an annual, informal day of prayer, but last year a group of churches asked the then acting prime minister Sam Abal to turn it into a public holiday.
The PNG Prime Minister agreed.and in early August of last year (07-Aug-2011), the Papua New Guinea National Executive Council gazetted a new annual non-working public holiday, the National Day of Repentance, to be observed annually on August 26, in the "PNG National Gazette No.G197".
As per the gazette entry, this new public holiday was to begin being observed in 2012. But, a couple of weeks later (19-Aug-2011), the office of Papua New Guinea's National Executive Council announced that Friday, August 26, 2011, had been declared as an official non-working public holiday in Papua New Guinea, to mark the National Day of Repentance.
Apparently, last night's announcement that Monday, August 27, 2012, would be observed as a one-off non-working public holiday in Papua New Guinea comes from the fact that "as that day is a Sunday the first business day thereafter becomes the public holiday".
