Paraguay's Secretaría Nacional de Turismo (Senatur), Liz Crámer, has called on the government of Paraguay to follow the legislation that gives it a mandate to move mid-week non-working public holidays to adjoin a nearby weekend.
The aforementioned legislation is law 1723/01 (Que Autoriza Al Poder Ejecutivo A Trasladar Los Feriados Nacionales Al Dia Lunes) which was passed a decade ago (29-Jun-2001) and gives the President the authority to move certain mid-week public holidays to a nearby Monday.
The law stipulates that any such executive change should be announced at least 6 months in advance, and that the following public holidays are to remain always fixed: New Year, Independence Day, día de La Virgen de Caacupé, and Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.
But, despite regular calls for the executive to avail itself of that prerogative (23-Sep-2010 and 26-Jul-2008), the provisions of law 1723/01 have rarely been used.
