The Dominican Republic's Comisión de Valores Patrios de la Pastoral Juvenil called on the Cámara de Diputados to unequivocally state, before the end of the current legislature whether it would ratify the Senate bill, passed last month, and which amends articles 2 and 4 of law 139-97 which regulates the moving of the dates of mid-week non-working public holidays in the Dominican Republic.
Last month (13-Jun-2013), the Dominican Republic's Senate passed into law a bill which amends articles 2 and 4 of law 139-97 which regulates the moving of the dates of mid-week non-working public holidays in the Dominican Republic.
Those amendments had been introduced 2 years ago (28-Jan-2011), then passed by the Senate (01-Apr-2011), but were then temporarily lapsed in the lower house (26-Jan-2012). As per these amendments 2 annual public holidays have been added to the list of fixed-date public holidays covered by the Ley número 139-97 which governs the observance of mid-week public holidays (19-Jun-1997): the Día de los Santos Reyes (January 6) and the Natalicio de Juan Pablo Duarte (January 26).
This leaves only the May 1, August 16 and November 6 public holidays to move when they fall on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.
A similar, more modest, amendment had been introduced last fall (14-Nov-2012) whereby the Duarte's Birthday public holiday would be observed on its set date, but only once in the calendar year 2013, because January 26, 2013 will be the 200th anniversary of Juan Pablo Duarte.
