SPD deputies from Germany's southern state (Land) of Baden-Württemberg have added their voice to the current spate of declarations, and intents to declare, October 31, 2017, as a one-off public holiday (gesetzlichen Feiertag) to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther posting his ninety-five theses on the door of the Castle Church of Wittenberg.

A couple of weeks ago (10-Jan-2013), a spokesperson for the government of Germany's state of Hessen had announced that it would also declare Reformation Day, on Tuesday, October 31, 2017, as a one-off non-working public holiday in the German state of Hessen.

Last month (13-Dec-2012), the Premier (Ministerpräsident) of Germany's state of Schleswig-Holstein, Torsten Albig, had announced that Reformation Day 2017 would be a one-off non-working public holiday in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein.

That same month, the Mayor of Germany's second largest city, and also one of Germany's full-fledged states, Hamburg, Olaf Scholz, has also announced that October 31, 2017, would be a one-off non-working public holiday throughout Hamburg.

The date of October 31, 2017, will mark the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther posting his ninety-five theses on the door of the Castle Church of Wittenberg, an event considered to herald the beginning of the Protestant Reformation.

Calls to restore the Reformation Day public holiday, either in specific States, or as a national public holiday, have been made repeatedly in past years (07-Jan-2013, 04-Nov-2012, 27-Nov-2009, 25-Mar-2009, 01-Nov-2007, and 07-Nov-2006).
