Lebanon Hariri Public Holiday February 14

(Posted on Friday, February 8, 2013)

The Government of Lebanon, through a statement by Prime Minister Najib Mikati, has declared Thursday, February 14, 2013, as a non-working public holiday to, once more, commemorate the anniversary of the 2005 assassination of Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

The date of February 14, the anniversary of the assasination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, has been declared a public holiday almost every year since his assasination (13-Feb-2007, 09-Feb-2008, 10-Feb-2009, 10-Feb-2011, and 08-Feb-2012), with February 14 falling on a Sunday in 2010.

In the past, expecting this trend to last was risky, as a return to a pro-Syrian government would surely have seen the end of this public holiday. However, with Syria being bogged-down in a civil war, its nuisance capacity is temporarily reuced.

The aforementioned Tuesday, February 14, 2012, non-working public holiday was not included in the list of official 2013 Lebanese public holidays, published at the end of last year (30-Nov-2012).
