Donegal County Council has backed calls for a new public holiday to be established to commemorate St Colmcille, one of Ireland's three patron saints, and a native of Donegal.

The proposal has been put forward by Cllr Jimmy Kavanagh, who says the first Monday in July would be the best time for such a new holiday.

Recall that the last changes to the list of Irish public holidays occurred in 2022, when the then Tánaiste and minister for enterprise, trade and employment, Leo Varadkar, signed into law a new annual public holiday for St Brigid's Day, beginning in 2023, as well as a one-off public holiday on Friday, March 18, 2022, to link the annual St Patrick Day public holiday with the subsequent weekend.

  • Jordan Declares May 25 Independence Day Public Holiday
    Jordan News Agency Petra (Amman)

Jordanian Prime Minister, Jaafar Hassan, has issued a directive declaring the public holidays for the upcoming Eid al-Adha (Feast of Sacrifice) as running "from the morning of Thursday, June 5, 2025, through the evening of Tuesday, June 10, 2025".

The aforementioned public holidays will apply to all government ministries, official departments, public institutions, universities, municipalities, joint service councils, the Greater Amman Municipality, and government-owned companies.

Although the above may seem to indicate public sector holidays only, back in October 2020, the then spokesperson for the Jordanian Ministry of Labour, Mohammad al-Zyoud, had clarified that "all official and religious holidays in Jordan include both public and private sectors" adding that "According to article 59 of the Labour Law, which clarifies the mechanism for making the employer work on his weekly, religious or public holidays, official communications issued for this purpose include private sector institutions without mentioning them in the communications.".

A similar clarification was issued again at the end of December 2023 by the Jordanian Ministry of Labour, though a couple of exceptions remain to that rule.

    Montsame Agency (Ulaanbaatar)

The Cabinet of the Government of Mongolia announced that the upcoming Buddha Day public holiday would be observed on Wednesday, June 11, 2025.

Recall that, in the autumn of 2019, the Mongolian Parliamentary State Structure Standing Committee had backed a draft bill, presented by MP D.Oyunkhorol, to declare Buddha Day (Vesak) as a new annual non-working public holiday in Mongolia.

And, in late 2019, the Mongolian Parliament approved amendments to the law on public holidays of Mongolia, whereby Buddha Day, celebrating the birth, enlightenment and death of Gautama Buddha, will be a new annual public holiday in Mongolia, beginning on June 5, 2020.

Initially, Mongolian media reports had pegged this new Buddha Day public holiday, if approved, as occurring for the first time on May 7, 2020, but at the time, we noted, in our post of October 23, 2019, that we felt that June 5, 2020, was more likely, if based on the Tögs Buyant Mongolian lunar calendar, rather than the simplistic "Day of the Full Moon in the month of May" rule mentioned in these same media reports.

Bolivia's Ministry of Labor, Employment and Social Security has announced that Tuesday, May 27, 2025, would be a half-day non-working public holiday for salaried mothers in the public and private sectors on account of Bolivian Mother's Day.

The aforementioned announcement states that "The Office of the President has announced that Monday, 26th May 2025 will be observed as a public holiday throughout The Gambia. This follows the commemoration of Africa Day, which falls on Sunday, 25 May 2025." and goes on to clarify that "In recognition of the day’s significance and since it coincides with a Sunday, the President of the Republic has declared the following Monday as a public holiday".

Today's declaration of Monday, May 26, 2025, as a public holiday is in line with the July 2021 Media Advisory on Public Holidays.

Recall that, last year, President Barrow had similarly declared Monday, May 27, 2024, as a non-working public holiday on account of Africa Liberation Day.
