South Korea Mulls August 14-15 Public Holidays

(Posted on Sunday, August 2, 2015)

Source: Yonhap News Agency (Seoul)

Earlier today, an official for the South Korean government cabinet announced that the South Korean government was considering declaring Friday, August 14, 2015, the day before the annual National Liberation Day non-working public holiday of South Korea, as a one-off ("temporary") non-working public holiday in South Korea, due to the annual Liberation Day non-working public holiday falling on a Saturday in 2015, the 70th anniversary of South Korea's liberation.

As per the aforementioned announcement, the home affairs ministry will review the pros and cons of the proposal to declare Friday, August 14, 2015, the day before the annual National Liberation Day non-working public holiday of South Korea, as a one-off ("temporary") non-working public holiday in South Korea, and the final decision will be made at the upcoming Cabinet meeting of Tuesday, August 11, 2015.

According to that same official, South Korean President Park Geun-Hye has not come to a decision yet, but she is likely to approve the declaration of Friday, August 14, 2015, as a one-off ("temporary") non-working public holiday in South Korea, due to the annual, august 15, Liberation Day non-working public holiday falling on a Saturday in 2015.

As per the official list of 2015 and 2016 South Korean annual non-working public holidays (12-Dec-2014), which now follow the "Substitute Holiday Bill", passed 2 years ago (03-May-2013), one-off day in lieu non-working public holiday are automatically declared on the Mondays which follow an annual non-working public holiday falling on a Sunday. However, the provisions of this bill do not provide for a day in lieu for public holidays that fall on a Saturday, even though Saturdays are officially non-working days since July 2005 (21-Jun-2005).
