Moldova 2017 Public Holidays Extension On Hold

(Posted on Friday, December 2, 2016)

The government of Moldova bill of last autumn, containing an extension to the list of 2017 annual non-working public holidays in Moldova ("cu privire la zilele de odihna în anul 2017"), has been stalled by opposition to it from Deputy Education Minister, Christine Boag, an has been placed on hold "sine die".

For most of the past decade, the annual initial lists of non-working public holidays in Moldova for the coming calendar year did not include any bridge public holidays, which were usually announced later, on a case-by-case basis (07-Dec-2013, 08-Feb-2013, 11-Apr-2012, 22-Feb-2012, 18-Feb-2011, 10-Aug-2010, 04-Dec-2009 and 10-Dec-2008).

However, starting 2 years ago (16-Nov-2014), well in advance of the beginning of 2015, the government of Moldova announced an extension of 3 bridge non-working public holidays in Moldova in 2015, to be compensated by a nearby Saturday being declared a regular working day in Moldova, and did not tinker any further with that list of non-working public holidays in Moldova for the calendar year 2015.

Last year (26-Oct-2015), the government of Moldova similarly announced a single one-off non-working public holiday in Moldova for 2016, to be observed on Monday, March 7, 2016, and to be compensated by the declaration of Saturday, March 5, 2016, as a regular working day.

Turning to the list of 2017 public holidays in Moldova, a couple of months ago (17-Oct-2016), the government of Moldova had announced an extension to the list of 2017 annual non-working public holidays in Moldova ("cu privire la zilele de odihna în anul 2017"), adding 3 one-off 2017 non-working public holidays in Moldova to the annual official list of non-working public holidays in Moldova for the upcoming calendar year 2017, to be observed on May 8, June 2, and September 1st, 2017, and to be compensated by the declaration of Saturday, May 13, June 10, and September 9, 2017, as regular working days in Moldova.

This year's announcement of 2017 bridge public holidays in Moldova was interesting as it included the declaration of a one-off bridge public holiday in Moldova in 2017, on June 2, thus confirming the addition of June 1st, International Children's Day, as a new annual non-working public holiday in Moldova beginning in the calendar year 2017 (30-May-2016 and 27-May-2016).
