Source: Europa Press - Summary: The governing council of the Madrid autonomous region community (Consejo de Gobierno de la Comunidad de Madrid) approved yesterday the list of 2009 regional public holidays, applicable to all municipalities within the community.
Two of the region's traditional public holidays, Santiago Apóstol and May 2nd, will fall on a Saturday in 2009. The council has decided to omit the former from its 2009 list of public holidays and replace it by San José. The May 2nd public holiday will, however, remain as a public holiday in 2009.
Finally, one notable surprise is the inclusion of Corpus Christi, on Thursday, June 11, 2009, as one of the regional public holidays of the autonomous community of Madrid. This is a holiday that has not been celebrated in the Madrid community since 1985 (it used to be a national public holiday throughout Spain until 1975).
