02 Nov 2009 (Diario Tiempo-Tegucigalpa) Following this weekend's declaration by the speaker of Honduras' Parliament, Ramón Velásquez, there has been widespread confusion that today, November 2nd, 2009, would be an official public holiday, which is not the case. • 14 Oct 2009 (El Heraldo-Tegucigalpa) Honduras' President, Roberto Micheletti, has declared tomorrow, Thursday, October 15, 2009, a one-off public holiday to celebrate today's national football team qualification for next year's World Cup in South Africa. • 13 Oct 2009 (Proceso Digital-Tegucigalpa) Honduras' Minister of the Interior (Ministro de Gobernación), Oscar Matute, announced yesterday that the upcoming, October 21, Army Day public holiday would be moved to the following Monday, October 26, 2009. • 13 Sep 2009 (El Heraldo-Tegucigalpa) On Friday night, Honduras' Secretary of Education, Santos Elio Sosa, announced that the traditional, week-long September educational public holidays, were abolished for this year. • 14 Apr 2009 (La Prensa-San Pedro Sula) News sources in Honduras report widespread surprise today, April 14, 2009, as all businesses, government offices and banks are open, despite it usually being the Day of the Americas public holiday. • 03 Apr 2009 (La Prensa-Tegucigalpa) Late last night, the Government of Honduras announced that it had added one day to the annual 9-day Holy Week public holidays given to the public sector, due to the same day's "triumph" of the Honduras football team against Mexico's. Law of Record: Public holidays in Honduras are governed by the Article 339 of the 1959 Labour Code (Decreto núm. 189 del 15 de julio de 1959) which replaced the Decreto Legislativo n° 96 de 4 de marzo de 1949, sobre días inhábiles o feriados and the Decreto Legislativo n° 7 de 11 de marzo de 1958, sobre días feriados. The dispositions of the 1959 Labour Code were amended by the 1987 Ley de Procedimiento Administrativo, which in turn was amended in 1998 by Decree 288-98 which cancelled the public holidays of April 14, September 17, October 3 and 12, to focus the nation's vital forces on repairing the damages done by hurricane Mitch. The amendment was later repealed in 2001 by Decree 199-2001 which re-instated these 4 public holidays. • Weekend Public Holidays: Article 339 of the Honduran Labour Code specifies that public holidays that fall on a week-end remain on that date (ie. no day in lieu is given). • Mid-Week Public Holidays: the Honduran government has a habit of officially moving some public holidays to the following Monday, but historical records show that which public holidays get moved to the following Monday is somewhat arbitrary, changes every year, and is usually only announced in the 10-15 days prior to the holiday. We would therefore recommend that you avoid trying to do business on any Monday that follows one of the above public holidays dates. • Semana Santa (week before Easter): Under President Ricardo Maduro (2002-2006) it bacame habitual for civil servants to get the first 3 days of Easter week off, to enable them to have 9 consecutive days off.
