Recent News and Updates |

28 Mar 2009 (Libération-Mamoudzou) The president of the French overseas territory of Mayotte, Ahmed Attoumani Douchina, has announced that Monday, March 30, 2009, would be a one-off public holiday to celebrate the expected victory of the "yes" vote in Sunday's referendum as to whether the territory should become the 101st department of France.
25 Oct 2006 The French cabinet has decided that the 2007 presidential elections will be held on April 22, 2007, followed by an almost certainly necessary second round on May 6, 2007. The presidential elections will be followed by a two-round vote for the legislative assembly, on June 10 and June 17, 2007. Note that French overseas dependencies, such as Guadeloupe, will cast their vote in the presidential election, the day before the vote in France.

Background Information |
|
Governing Law: Official public holidays in Mayotte are regulated by the Articles L222-1 et suivants du code du travail de Mayotte and the Accord interprofessionnel du 21 août 1998 relatif aux jours fériés.
Weekend Public Holidays: Public holidays that occur on a weekend remain on that date (ie. they are not moved to another date, such as the following Monday, for example).
Paid and unpaid public holidays: of the list of all official public holidays in Mayotte, only 4 are paid public holidays (obligatoirement chômés payés): January 1st, Easter Monday, May 1st, and the Muslim festival of Ide el Kabîr (Feast of Sacrifice). All the other public holidays, though official, are unpaid (non obligatoirement chômés payés).
Mayotte International Codes YT and MYT (2 and 3-letter ISO3166 codes) and .yt (ICANN national top-level internet domain). • Other Sources of Information The following specialized websites are also a good source of Mayotte information and news: Bank of France (Mayotte central bank), ASI Hot Spots (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (Mayotte maps, demographics and economic statistics), the IFES (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and voter participation in Mayotte), and Wikipedia (includes Mayotte commemorative dates that are not necessarily public holidays). |

Footnotes |
|
* |
Observance : Any entry in the Observance column indicates that, in Mayotte, the holiday may be regional or non-official or limited to certain religious and/or linguistic groups, or begin at a time other than midnight. Note that religious holidays are included only if they are national public holidays, or if the national labour code has specific holiday allowances for employees of specific religions. For more information, see our pages on the religious calendars of the world. |
|
** |
Religious Holidays : Public holidays in Mayotte that are based on certain religious calendars may be subject to local variations due to differing interpretations between different religious authorities, or to seemingly arbitrary changes in the date a holiday is celebrated because it conflicts with another holiday that is based on another calendar, or because the day of the holiday is deemed inauspicious (bad luck). To find out more about these uncertainties, see the footnote below, if any, for each specific religion. |

Muslim Holidays : Muslim bank holidays, legal holidays and public holidays for Mayotte were evaluated using the Umm al-Qura Calendar of Saudi Arabia which is used in Saudi Arabia and in most of the Persian Gulf States. Holidays may occur a day later in countries outside the Gulf region. The sunrises, sunsets, moon phases, moonrises and moonsets used in these calculations are based on the location of Mecca (latitude 21.42°N, longitude, 39.82°E, GMT+3 hours, no summer time rules). For more details on Muslim holidays, see Muslim Calendar Holidays. For Salat (prayer times) calculations, see our Freeware page. |
