28 Dec 2006 (Olvia Press) On 27 December, the President of Pridnestrovie (PMR), Igor Smirnov, signed the law passed by the Supreme Soviet on 20 December, making January 2nd, every year, a nonworking holiday. Transdniestria's official name is Pridnestrovie (short form) or Pridnestrovskaia Moldavskaia Respublica (long form). The abbreviation PMR is also commonly used. • Transdniestria is one of the western name variants most commonly encountered in the western press, as well as Transdnistria, Transdniestr, Trans-Dniestria, Transdniester, Transniestria. The use of these, particularly Transnistria, is discouraged by local sources . • All the listed public holidays, except for Orthodox Christmas, Orthodox Easter, and Commemoration Day, are specified in Article 112 of the Labor Code of the Pridnestrian Moldavian Republic. Although these three Orthodox holidays are not in the official labor code's list of public holidays, around 80% of the population celebrate Christmas and Easter actively, and all businesses close, just like government offices and banks. So these dates can be considered regular public holidays. • Constitution Day (December 24) refers to the second constitution approved in a nationwide referendum on December 24, 1995. The first constitution was adopted in 1991, following the 2 September 1990 declaration of independence (the origin of Independence Day). • The Constitution of Pridnestrovie declares three official languages: Moldovan, Russian and Ukrainian.
