Governing Law: Official public holidays in the US Virgin Islands are regulated by 1 V.I. Code Ann. § 171(a) of the Virgin Islands Code. • Transfer Day: On March 31, 1917, the United States purchased the Caribbean Islands known as the Danish West Indies from the country of Denmark for the sum of US$25 million. The US Virgin Islands government annually celebrates this transfer of territory ownership in the form of an official holiday known as Transfer Day. • St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John are the 3 main islands that make up the United States Virgin Islands. • Each of the Virgin Islands has its own carnival-type celebration and they are usually local holidays. St. Croix has its Christmas Festival around January 6th.
