Background Information

Governing Law: The official public holidays of Kazakhstan are regulated by the Law on Public Holidays in the Republic of Kazakhstan, and the Labour Law 1999 which was amended in 2001, 2005, and 2009.  Mid-Week Public Holidays: Section 56-4 of Kazakhstan's Labour Code entitles the government to move any public holiday that falls in the middle of the week to another weekday, such as a Monday or Friday, to minimize the disruption caused by holidays to business life.  Classification: Public holidays are grouped into 3 categories: National Holidays, State Public Holidays, and Religious Public Holidays. When any of the holidays of the first 2 categories fall on a weekend, a day in lieu is given on the next working day.  Kazakhstan International Codes KZ and KAZ (2 and 3-letter ISO3166 codes) and .kz (ICANN national top-level internet domain). Other Sources of Information The following specialized websites are also a good source of Kazakhstan information and news: National Bank of Kazakhstan (Kazakhstan central bank), UnitedHealthcare Global (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (Kazakhstan maps, demographics and economic statistics), the IFES (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and voter participation in Kazakhstan), and Wikipedia (includes Kazakhstan commemorative dates that are not necessarily public holidays).

Religious Holidays : Public holidays in Kazakhstan that are based on certain religious calendars may be subject to local variations due to differing interpretations between different religious authorities, or to seemingly arbitrary changes in the date a holiday is celebrated because it conflicts with another holiday that is based on another calendar, or because the day of the holiday is deemed inauspicious (bad luck). To find out more about these uncertainties, see the footnote below, if any, for each specific religion.
