Background Information

Governing Law: Official public holidays in Ghana are regulated by section 1 of the Public Holidays Act, 2001 (Act 601), which replaced the 1995 Public Holiday (Amendment) Act (Act 507), which in turn had amended the Public Holidays Law, 1988 (PNDCL 220).  Eid al Fitr was made a public holiday in Ghana following the 1995 Public Holiday (Amendment) Act (Act 507).  Farmers' Day: Employing around 60 percent of Ghana’s work force, agriculture is a labour-intensive sector, and farming still accounts for some 37 percent of Ghana’s gross domestic product, and 35 percent of its export earnings. The first Farmers' Day, in Ghana, was held at Osino in the Eastern Region, in 1985 .  June 4: June 4 was a public holiday until 2000 when it was removed from the list of public holidays by the NPP (New Patriotic Party). A last-ditch effort was made in late-May 2001, by the NDC (National Democratic Congress) to restore it, but the amendment failed to pass on June 1, 2001, and the issue has not resurfaced seriously since then.  Ghana International Codes GH and GHA (2 and 3-letter ISO3166 codes) and .gh (ICANN national top-level internet domain). • Other Sources of Information The following specialized websites are also a good source of Ghana information and news: Bank of Ghana (Ghana central bank), UnitedHealthcare Global (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (Ghana maps, demographics and economic statistics), the IFES (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and voter participation in Ghana), and Wikipedia (includes Ghana commemorative dates that are not necessarily public holidays).
