Botswana Declares October 16 Election Public Holiday

Botswana's Minister of Presidential Affairs and Public Administration, Margaret Nasha, has announced that the upcoming election day, Friday, October 16, 2009, will be a public holiday.
This follows last week's announcement of general elections (2009-09-03), by Botswana's President, Ian Khama, and the repeated calls to make election day a public holiday, by both the opposition and the governing parties, as well as the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) (2007-07-20, 2008-08-22, 2008-11-27, 2009-01-26, and 2009-03-14).
