The government of Bulgaria has announced that Monday, September 21, 2009, would be a one-off bridge public holiday, linking the weekend to the September 22, Independence Day public holiday.
In compensation, Saturday, September 26, 2009, has been declared a regular working day in Bulgaria.
This announcement would normally have been as expected, but since the beginning of this year, the bridge public holidays policy of former prime minister, Sergei Stanishev, had come under heavy criticism, with the usual May 1-6 public holidays having been canceled for a few days last spring (2009-02-12 and 2009-02-19).
