Cyprus' Environment Commissioner, Charalmbos Theopemptou, has petitioned President Demetris Christofias to declare an annual "Clean up Cyprus Day" public holiday where everyone gets a day off work and join forces to clean up the island.
Commissioner Theopemptou went on to suggest that this new annual public holiday could coincide with the Green Week of June 5th.
Somewhat similar public works holidays have been declared in the past by Macedonia (2008-11-18 and 2008-03-12), while Pakistan is also contemplating the declaration of such a holiday (2009-02-25).
