As part of the current austerity measures, the Government of Portugal is considering changing the way bank holidays and public holidays are taken, in order to boost productivity.
As part of the proposals being considered is the moving of all public holidays to Mondays or Fridays, to avoid people taking 4-day public holidays when a fixed-date public holiday falls on a Thursday or Tuesday.
Last summer (2010-07-23), Portugal's parliament rejected a draft bill that would have removed some public holidays while moving the date of some other public holidays to adjoin the nearest weekend.
