Belgium's Defense Minister, Pieter De Crem, has proposed a set of measures to reduce Belgium's budget deficit, including the cancellation of the annual Pentecost Monday public holiday.
Almost a decade ago (2003-11-06 and 2004-02-02), neighboring France canceled the Pentecost Monday public holiday in France, following the 2003 heat wave, as a means of funding care for the elderly, but the measure was highly unpopular and the Pentecost Monday public holiday was re-instated a few years later (2008-01-29).
