Belgium Pentecost Public Holiday Faces The Ax

(Posted on Sunday, February 26, 2012)

Belgium's Defense Minister, Pieter De Crem, has proposed a set of measures to reduce Belgium's budget deficit, including the cancellation of the annual Pentecost Monday public holiday.

Almost a decade ago (06-Nov-2003 and 02-Feb-2004), neighboring France canceled the Pentecost Monday public holiday in France, following the 2003 heat wave, as a means of funding care for the elderly, but the measure was highly unpopular and the Pentecost Monday public holiday was re-instated a few years later (29-Jan-2008).
