The recent bill "Lei da Copa", which will allow Brazilian states and municipalities to declare one-off public holidays whenever a FIFA World Cup game occurs in their jurisdiction in 2014, has been signed into law by Brazilian president, Dilma Rousseff.
The bill leading to the "Lei da Copa" was introduced last fall (2011-09-22), and in its original form would have allowed Brazilian states and municipalities to also declare one-off public holidays whenever a FIFA selection game occurred in their jurisdiction in 2013.
Similar FIFA World Cup public holidays bills had been introduced in the past.
Two years ago (2010-08-27), a bill introduced by Deputy Felipe Bornier would have declared a public holiday on days when the Brazilian national football team played in the World Cup.
And last year (2010-05-13), a bill introduced by Brazilian PL deputy, Mendes Thames, which would have declared a series of additional June public holidays, every 4 years, to coincide with Brazil's participation in the FIFA World Cup.
