Malawi government spokesperson, Maganizo Mazeze, has announced that, with immediate effect, December 26 (Boxing Day) would be restored as an official non-working public holiday in Malawi.

The Boxing Day public holiday was removed from the list of annual non-working public holidays in Malawi, was removed 5 years ago (2007-10-01) at the behest of then president Bingu wa Mutharika who considered that Malawi has too many annual non-working public holidays.

Apparently, president Bingu wa Mutharika's death, earlier this year (2012-04-19), paved the way for the return of Boxing Day as an annual non-working public holiday in Malawi.
