Malawi's Chief Secretary to the Government in the Office of the President and Cabinet, Bright Msaka, has announced that President Bingu wa Mutharika had once again declared a 16-day period of public sector holidays from Saturday, December 22, 2012, until Sunday, January 6, 2013, inclusively.
As per President Bingu's statement, these public sector holidays were declared ("in order to allow civil servants sufficient time to celebrate the Christmas and New year festive season with their families") in a manner similar to what was done in past years (2011-12-20 and 2009-12-22).
In related Malawi public holidays news, earlier this week (2012-12-18), Malawi government spokesperson, Maganizo Mazeze, had announced that the December 26 (Boxing Day) public holiday, removed 5 years ago (2007-10-01) from the official list of Malawi public holidays, would be restored as an official non-working public holiday in Malawi, effective in 2012.
