Malaysian Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, has announced that, beginning in 2013, all Malaysian government public servants from the Sikh community would be given a day off public holiday on Vaisakhi Day.
This is the first time, as far as we can remember, that Malaysia has declared a public holiday for members of a specific religion.
It remains to be seen if this promise, made at a mass gathering of the Sikh community at Dataran Merdeka, will be followed by action, as previous promises to Malaysian religious minorities have in the past been broken (20-Jan-2011 and 20-Jan-2008).
