Malaysia Adds Sikh Public Holiday

Malaysian Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, has announced that, beginning in 2013, all Malaysian government public servants from the Sikh community would be given a day off public holiday on Vaisakhi Day.

This is the first time, as far as we can remember, that Malaysia has declared a public holiday for members of a specific religion.

It remains to be seen if this promise, made at a mass gathering of the Sikh community at Dataran Merdeka, will be followed by action, as previous promises to Malaysian religious minorities have in the past been broken (2011-01-20 and 2008-01-20).
