The Government of Singapore has announced that May 26, 2012, the date of the upcoming Hougang by-election would not be another one-off non-working public holiday in Singapore.

Last year (2011-04-19), the Government of Singapore had declared Saturday, May 7, 2011, as a one-off public holiday on account of that date's general elections. In addition, the Singapore Ministry of Education (MOE) had announced that the following Monday, May 9, 2011, would be a school holiday for all teaching staff and pupils throughout Singapore.
