The President of Colombia's Congress, Roy Barreras, has announced that he was opposed to the recently-introduced bill purporting to declare May 12 as a new annual non-working public holiday in Colombia.

Last week (2013-03-29), a bill was introduced into the lower house of Colombia (Cámara de Representantes) to declare May 12 as a new annual non-working public holiday in Colombia. That bill, introduced by Carlos Alberto Zuluaga, would amend Colombia's Law 51 of 1983, which specifies the dates of the 10 annual religious holidays and 8 annual civil holidays. Law 51 of 1983, is also named Ley Emiliani, after its architect, who died a decade ago (2005-10-02).

On May 12, 2013, Madre Laura Montoya Upegui will become the first Saint from Colombia.
