Spain Basque Public Holidays Amendments Gazetted

The executive of Spain's autonomous region of the País Vasco has gazetted the recent "Decreto 454/2013, de 3 de diciembre, por el que se modifica el Calendario Oficial de Fiestas Laborales de la Comunidad Autónoma de Euskadi para el año 2014" (BOPV de 10 de diciembre de 2013) which officializes the replacement of the October 25 annual public holiday by one on July 25.

Last spring (2013-06-08 and 2013-05-26) a bill was introduced in the Basque parliament aiming to replace the October 25 public holiday, added to the list of Spain's Basque public holidays a few years ago (2010-04-23), to commemorate the anniversary date of the Statute of Gernika in 1979.

However, the October 25, Día del País Vasco, public holiday was maintained in the subsequent "Decreto 381/2013, de 9 de julio, de la Comunidad Autónoma del País Vasco/Euskadi, por el que se aprueba el Calendario Oficial de Fiestas Laborales de la Comunidad Autónoma de Euskadi para el año 2014." announcing the official non-working public holidays in 2014 for Spain's autonomous region of the País Vasco (2013-07-09).

A few weeks ago (2013-10-30), Spain's Basque Parliament nonetheless began debating in commission a bill aiming to cancel the October 25 annual non-working public holiday, and last month (2013-11-15), Spain's Basque Parliament approved the bill canceling, as soon as 2014, the October 25 annual non-working public holiday, without being able to agree on a date for its replacement (at the time December 3 was the most likely choice).

Finally, last week (2013-12-03), the executive of Spain's autonomous region of the País Vasco announced that it had decided on July 25 (Santiago Apóstol) as the date of the public holiday, in 2014 at least, to replace the October 25 public holiday, and that it would soon amend the relevant decree ("Decreto 381/2013, de 9 de julio, de la Comunidad Autónoma del País Vasco/Euskadi, por el que se aprueba el Calendario Oficial de Fiestas Laborales de la Comunidad Autónoma de Euskadi para el año 2014") accordingly.

Note that, in face of fierce opposition criticisms, the País Vasco executive stopped short of declaring July 25 as the new Basque National day ("sustituyendo el día 25 de octubre, Día del País Vasco-Euskadiko Eguna, por el día 25 de julio, festividad de Santiago Apóstol").
