The government of Honduras has reversed its earlier decision, and has declared tomorrow, Wednesday, June 25, 2014, as another afternoon public sector public holiday, beginning at 12:30 pm local time, to allow civil servants to watch the World Cup game between Honduras and Switzerland.
Last week (2014-06-19), the government of Honduras had reversed an earlier decision (2014-06-15), and has declared Friday, June 20, 2014, as an afternoon public sector public holiday, beginning at 15:00 (3pm) local time, to allow civil servants to watch the World Cup game between Honduras and Ecuador.
As per the communiqué by the Secretaría de Derechos Humanos, Justicia, Gobernación y Descentralización, this afternoon public sector holiday will allow Hondurans to patriotically support their national team ("apoyar moralmente a la selección nacional y resaltar el amor patrio").
The previous week (2014-06-15), in a break with his predecessor's frequent declaration of Football non-working public holidays, Honduras' new President, Juan Orlando Hernández, had announced that there would be no one-off non-working public holidays in Honduras, neither on June 20 nor on June 25, and that focus should be on work ("trabajo y más trabajo").
Last year (2013-10-15), following Honduras' qualification for the current World Cup, Honduras' President, Porfirio Lobo, had declared tomorrow, Wednesday, October 16, 2013, as another one-off non-working public holiday. Earlier that year (2013-09-24), following the requests of Honduras' business and football associations, Honduras' President, Porfirio Lobo, had already moved the date of the October 3, Día del Soldado, annual non-working public holiday to Friday, October 11, 2013, to coincide with the upcoming football game between Honduras and Costa Rica.
In related news, Costa Rica has announced that public sector employees in Costa Rica would get 2 hours off work on Friday, June 20, and Tuesday, June 24, 2014, to allow civil servants to watch the World Cup games between Costa Rica and Italy, and Costa Rica and the UK, respectively.
