The Office of the President of the Maldives, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, has issued a press communiqué indicating that, contrary to past practice, Monday, March 3, 2014, would not be declared a one-off public holiday in the Maldives to coincide with the year's first sitting of the People's Majlis.

In the past 5 years (2013-02-25, 2012-02-22, 2011-02-22, 2010-02-22 and 2009-03-02), both former and present Maldives' Presidents have declared one-off non-working public holidays on the date of the first sitting of the People's Majlis of the year, although that date had not been included in the list of official public holidays in the Maldives for that same year (2012-01-06, 2011-01-04, 2010-01-05, and 2009-01-06) as was the case this year for 2013 public holidays in the Maldives (2013-01-07).

Note that, 2 years ago (2012-03-16), the first sitting of the People's Majlis for 2012 was subsequently moved to Monday, March 19, 2012, although the March 1st, 2012, public holiday was not canceled, and no additional non-working public holiday was declared on March 19, 2012.
