Romania's outgoing president, Traian Basescu, has signed a decree promulgating the recently-voted law ("LEGEA nr. 171/2014 pentru modificarea art. 139 alin. (1) din Legea nr. 53/2003 – Codul Muncii"), published in the Monitorul Oficial nr. 922 din 18 decembrie 2014, declaring January 24 as a new annual non-working public holiday in Romania to mark the anniversary of the Romanian Principalities' Union.

Earlier this month (2014-12-03), the Romanian Chamber Of Deputies had voted its final approval to the Senate Bill that would declare January 24 as a new annual non-working public holiday in Romania to mark the Union of Romanian Principalities.

Last spring (2014-04-17) by the Romanian Government announced that it had approved the long-expected new annual non-working Romanian public holiday on January 24, to commemorate the reunification of Wallachia and Moldavia, followed shortly after (2014-04-24), by the Romanian Senate approving that recently proposed new annual non-working Romanian public holiday on January 24, to commemorate the reunification of Wallachia and Moldavia.

Then, earlier this fall (2014-09-08), following a favorable opinion of the Committee On Employment And Social Protection of the Romanian Chamber Of Deputies, the bill to declare January 24 as a new annual non-working public holiday, was included on the agenda of the Chamber of Deputies for the aforementioned final vote.

Four years ago (2010-11-30), the Romanian Senate had approved a similar draft law, introduced 2 years before that (2009-01-20), which would have declared January 24, the anniversary of the reunification of Wallachia and Moldavia, as a new annual legal public holiday in Romania.

At the beginning of the following year (2011-01-13), the Vice-President of the Chamber of Deputies Commission in charge of reviewing proposed public holidays, Claudia Boghicevici, announced that the bill making January 24 an annual public holiday would not be approved in time for 2011 (!).
