  • Honduras Declares 2 Morazan Public Sector Holidays
    El Heraldo (Tegucigalpa)

The Ministry of the Interior of Honduras has announced that the public sector would get Monaday and Tuesday, September 29 and 30, 2025, as public holidays, thus extending the public sector Morazan Week holidays to the entire week ("asueto toda la semana a partir del lunes 29 al viernes 03 de octubre de 2025").

As usual, the days off on September 29 and 30 will count as part of the public sector's annual vacations.

Last week, the Honduran Council of Private Enterprise (COHEP) had announced the dates of the 2025 Semana Morazánica bank holidays and private sector public holidays as follows, "the holidays will begin on Wednesday at twelve noon, until Saturday at twelve noon".

The Semana Morazánica public holidays of Honduras come from the combination of 3 of Honduras' annual public holidays; on October 3 (Anniversary of Francisco Morazá), 12 (Discovery of America) and 21 (Armed Forces Day).

In the 2000s and early 2010s, due to their proximity in the calendar, these 3 annual October public holidays were often tinkered with, usually at the last minute.

Then, in 2014, during the administration of the Juan Orlando Hernández, the Decreto Legislativo No. 75-2014 del 29 de septiembre, put an end to the annual uncertainty by moving all 3 of Honduras' annual October non-working public holidays to the last week of October.

A year later, the Semana Morazánica public holidays were moved from the last week of October to the beginning of October, by the Legislative Decree No. 78-2015.

The 2015 changes to the dates of the Semana Morazánica were the last permanent changes, though the 2020 Semana Morazánica was moved many times due to the pandemic.

Initially announced as October 7 to 11, 2020, the 2020 Marazan Week was moved to the first week of November, then to the following week, November 11-14, 2020, then indefinitely postponed due to due to the arrival of tropical storm Eta in Honduras. In the end, the Decreto Ejecutivo Número PCM-135-2020 declared December 24, 30 and 31, 2020, as compensation for the canceled Semana Morazánica public holidays of October 2020.

Slovakia's Finance Minister, Ladislav Kamenický (Smer-SD), has presented a budget aimed at repairing the country’s troubled public finances, and which would see the temporary cancellation of 2 additional public holidays, namely Epiphany on January 6 and Liberation of the Republic Day on May 8th.

Recall that, in early June, Slovakia's Prime Minister, Robert Fico, had announced that one lay public holiday and one religious public holiday could be canceled as part of the ongoing consolidation of Slovak public finances.

A few days later, as a first step, his coalition government agreed to cancel the annual November 17 Day of the Struggle for Freedom and Democracy public holiday, effective in 2025, while adding that "the government is open to discussing a similar measure for one additional public holiday, starting in 2026".

In May 2012, the same Prime Minister of Slovakia, as today, Robert Fico, echoed a call from the Chairman and Speaker of Slovakia's Parliament, Richard Sulik, to cancel the September 1st public holiday, and in December 2023, the Parliament of Slovakia approved the cancellation of the September 1st, Constitution Day annual public holiday, beginning in 2024.

The President of Trinidad and Tobago, Christine Carla Kangaloo, has declared Monday, October 20, 2025, as a public holiday in Trinidad and Tobago, on account of the upcoming Divali.

As per the aforementioned Legal Notice published earlier today, "It is hereby notified that I, Christine Carla Kangaloo, O.R.T.T., President, acting in accordance with the provisions of the Public Holidays and Festivals Act, Chapter 19:05, have appointed Monday 20th October, 2025 as the date of the public holiday in celebration of the festival of Divali".

The Divali public holiday had been included in the official list of Trinidad and Tobago bank holidays and of public holidays for the calendar year 2025, which was released by the Government of Trinidad and Tobago earlier this year. But, as usual, that initial list marked the Muslim and Hindu public holidays dates as TBA (to be announced), as these are traditionally announced at the last-minute.

  • Malawi Declares September 16 Electoral Public Holiday
Government of the Republic of Malawi (Lilongwe)

The Secretary for Malawi's Ministry of Local Government, Unity and Culture, Richard Hara, has announced the declaration of a public holiday on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, on account of the Tripartite Elections being held on that day.

As per the Ministry's media release, "The Ministry of Local Government, Unity and Culture wishes to remind the general public that section 77(2) of the Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Government Elections Act provides for a public holiday on the polling day. This is to give people the opportunity to freely exercise their right to vote. Since this year's polling day falls on Tuesday, 16th September, 2025, it therefore. follows that that day will be a public holiday.".

Despite the wording of today's announcement, the date of past Tripartite Elections has not always been observed as a public holiday.

Last time, Malawi's chief secretary to government, Lloyd Muhara, issued a statement ruling out the declaration of Tuesday, May 21, 2019, as a one-off non-working public holiday on account of the 2019 Tripartite Elections.

Five years before that, Malawi's Secretary to the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Kester Kaphaizi, had similarly announced that the government of Malawi would not declare Tuesday, May 20, 2014, as a one-off non-working public holiday in Malawi, despite it being Election Day.

However, five years before that, Malawi's then Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Patrick Kabambe, did announce that the government of Malawi had declared Tuesday, May 19, 2009, a public holiday on the occasion of that year's Parliamentary and Presidential Elections.

  • Chilean Government Rules-Out September 20 Public Holiday
Tramitación de proyectos (Congreso Nacional de Chile)

Chilean Finance Minister, Nicolás Grau, has flatly ruled-out the recent initiative by member of Parliament, Camila Musante (Ind.-PPD), to declare Saturday, September 20, 2025, a public holiday, stating that "We don't believe there's enough time to hold the discussion".

The measure was intended to provide relief to workers who would not be able to enjoy an extended long weekend , despite the public holidays on Thursday and Friday, September 18 and 19, 2025.

In the middle of last month, Camila Musante had similarly introduced a bill to declare Wednesday, September 17, 2025, as a one-off public holiday thereby extending this year's fiestas patrias to 5 days ("The increased demand in the tourism and services sectors could generate temporary jobs in hospitality, commerce, and other industries to meet the increased influx of people"), but on Wednesday Interior Minister Álvaro Elizalde announced that the Government had rejected that proposal.

In 2007, the Labour code of Chile was amended by adding a 3rd sub-paragraph to Article 35, automatically making September 17 a public holiday when it falls on a Monday, and automatically making September 20 a public holiday when it falls on a Friday.

Five years later, in 2012, Chilean member of Parliament, Ricardo Rincón (DC), introduced legislation to further extend the September Fiestas Patrias by making September 17 a non-working public holiday when both the 18th and 19th fall on a weekend (ie. when September 17 is a Friday), as well as January 2 being declared a non-working public holiday, whenever it falls on a Monday. That bill was passed very swiftly, with little opposition, probably as its effects were far away, with the first occurrence of a Monday, January 2, non-working public holiday being in 2017, and the first Friday, September 17, occurring in 2021.

Some exceptions to the above 2 laws were declared on occasion, as was the case in 2010, when then Chilean President, Sebastián Piñera, signed into law Law 20.450, which declared Friday and Monday, September 17 and 20, 2010, as additional public holidays.

  • Paraguay Declares Public Holiday For World Cup Qualification
    Portal Paraguayo de Noticias (PPN)

Late last night, local time, Paraguay's President, Santiago Peña, signed the decree No.4522 declaring a one-off public holiday on Friday, September 5, 2025, following the National Team's qualification for the 2026 World Cup ("Declárase Feriado Nacional el día viernes 5 de setiembre de 2025 para conmemorar la histórica clasificación de la Selección paraguaya (la Albirroja) a la Copa Mundial de la FIFA 2026, de conformidad con el exordio de este Decreto").

The declaration of this one-off public holiday was made possible by the recent promulgation of Law No. 7544, which gives legal authority to the president to declare up to three one-off public holidays per year, in special situations such as sporting events, historical anniversaries, or to promote domestic tourism and national trade.

Last weekend, President Peña had announced that he was considering the possibility of declaring Friday, September 5, 2025, as a one-off public holiday if Paraguay qualified for the 2026 World Cup after a 16-year absence ("The holiday law hasn't been enacted yet, but we might have a surprise on Friday. We shouldn't celebrate prematurely, but if Paraguay returns to the World Cup after so much, I think it's worth it for everyone to celebrate").

Another of such possible one-off public holidays could occur in 2027, the year in which the bicentennial of the birth of Marshal Francisco Solano López, a national hero, is celebrated.
