The Minister of Natural Resources of Guyana, Raphael Trotman, at a post-cabinet press briefing, announced that Friday, March18, 2016, the day designated for the upcoming Local Government Elections (LGE) will not be a one-off non-working public holiday in Guyana, as was the case on previous electoral dates.

The date of the past 3 general elections in Guyana were declared as one-off non-working public holidays in Guyana (2015-05-04, 2015-01-21, 2011-11-24, 2011-11-23, 2011-10-10 and 2006-08-23), but today's announcement that of Friday, March18, 2016, would not be declared a one-off non-working public holiday in Guyana, in addition to the annual list of official non-working 2016 public holidays in Guyana, announced last autumn, as "Traditionally in other parts of the world, Local Government Elections are not treated, of course unfortunately, with the same level of importance or urgency as regional or national elections and they are traditionally accompanied by lower turnouts or interest".
