Canada BC Family Day Public Holidays Update

Source: The Government of the Province of British Columbia (Victoria)

The petition launched in 2015 to request that the Government of Canada's Province of British Columbia change the date of the annual Family Day non-working public holiday has now reached 20000 signatures.

Six years ago (2011-10-05), making good on the promise made earlier (2011-02-03), when she was the front-runner for the leadership of the BC Liberal Party, the Premier of Canada's Province of British Columbia, Christy Clark, announced that Monday, February 18, 2013, would be the first occurrence of a new, Family Day, annual public holiday.

But, later (2012-05-29), The Premier of Canada's Province of British Columbia, Christy Clark, finally announced that contrary to earlier announcements, Monday, February 11, 2013, would be the first occurrence of the new, Family Day, annual public holiday in British Columbia, following a two-week social media campaign to determine when exactly in February to set this new annual non-working public holiday (2012-05-11), as the earlier "third Monday of February" date would mean that both British Columbia and the neighboring Province of Alberta would be on holiday on the same date, thus adding congestion to British Columbia's ski resorts (which are a very popular destination for Albertans on Family Day).

For the moment (2015-05-30), the Government of Canada's Province of British Columbia has confirmed that for 2017 and 2018, Family Day BC public holiday would be observed on the second Monday of February, as announced by Premier Clark, following the social media campaign of 5 years ago (2012-05-29).
