The government of Portugal, in a decree signed by the Portuguese Minister for Foreign Affairs, on behalf of the Prime Minister, António Costa, has declared a national public sector holiday (tolerância de ponto) on Tuesday, December 26, 2017.

The aforementioned declaration of Tuesday, December 26, 2017, as a one-off non-working public sector holiday in Portugal ("É concedida tolerância de ponto aos trabalhadores que exercem funções públicas nos serviços da administração direta do Estado, sejam eles centrais ou desconcentrados, e nos institutos públicos no próximo dia 26 de dezembro de 2017") is explained as being in line with tradition ("tradicional a deslocação de muitas pessoas para fora dos seus locais de residência no período natalício tendo em vista a realização de reuniões familiares").

In any event the declaration of Tuesday, December 26, 2017, as a public sector holiday in Portugal, follows last spring's declaration of Friday, May 12, 2017, also as a one-off non-working public sector holiday in Portugal, to coincide with the visit of Pope Francis to Portugal that same month (2017-05-01), and last year's reinstatement (2016-03-19, 2016-01-08, 2016-01-03, 2015-12-19 and 2015-11-11) of the 4 annual public holidays of Portugal that had been canceled a few years before (2012-08-01, 2012-05-09, 2011-11-14, 2012-03-12, 2012-01-18, 2011-12-01, 2011-07-03 and 2011-10-15).
