Costa Rica's Governing Council has announced that the Costa Rican public sector and government agencies would benefit from public holidays during the upcoming Christmas holidays, from Saturday, December 21, 2019, until Sunday, January 5, 2020, inclusively ("conceder a título de vacaciones a los servidores públicos los días 23, 24, 26, 27, 30 y 31 de diciembre del 2019, así como los días 2 y 3 de enero del 2020").

The extension of the 2019-2020 year-end public sector holidays mirrors that of Easter (2018-03-16), is a regular occurrence in neighboring Nicaragua (2017-04-06, 2016-03-15, 2014-04-07, 2013-03-05, 2012-03-24, 2011-04-08, 2010-03-17, 2009-03-20, and 2008-03-10), and had been observed regularly until 2013 in Costa Rica (2013-03-18, 2012-03-25, 2010-03-11 and 2009-03-19), but was not so observed for the 2 years, until 3 years ago when the practice was started again (2018-11-29, 2017-03-15 and 2016-02-24).
