Belize's Prime Minister, Dean Barrow, has rejected the proposal by the president of the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI), Marissa Longsworth, that the upcoming general elections be held on a Sunday, rather than on Wednesday, Nоvеmbеr 11, 2020 ("I cannot get Cabinet’s approval for holding this year’s general elections on a Sunday").

Earlier this week (2020-10-06), Belize's Міnіѕtеr оf Nаtіоnаl Ѕесurіtу, Місhаеl Реуrеfіttе, announced that the Prime Minister, Dean Barrow, had accepted the proposal by the Leader of the Opposition, John Briceño, that the date of the upcoming general elections, Wednesday, Nоvеmbеr 11, 2020, be declared a а рublіс аnd bank holiday in Belize, based on section 9 of the Holidays Act, chapter 289 of the Laws of Belize, which empowers the Minister responsible for holidays to declare a special day as a public and bank holiday at any time.

That announcement was almost immediately followed by a reaction by the president of the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry ("This additional cost would have been challenging even during normal times, but is exacerbated during the current depressed economic conditions.") which asked for the upcoming general election to be moved to a Sunday.

Responding to a further argument in the Prime Minister's letter ("sounding of some church leaders shows that the churches would be against it"), the BCCI president pointed out that some past elections were held on Ash Wednesday ("one of the most significant days on the Christian calendar").

In the past, the date of Belize's elections was sometimes declared as a one-off public holiday (2012-02-18 and 2003-02-05), but often not, as was the case in 2008 and 2015.
