The Commissioner Secretary of the Administration of Union Territory of Ladakh has declared Thursday, October 22, 2020, as a public holiday in the Union Territory of Ladakh ("Public Holiday shall be observed within the limits of Leh district on account of 6th LAHDC, Election, 2020, on the date of Poll, as fixed i.e. on 22nd October 2020 (Thursday)").
The aforementioned "Holding of 6th LAHDC, Election, 2020- Declaration of Poll Day as public paid holiday" is contained in the Union Territory of Ladakh General Administration Department Government Order No:88-LA(GAD) of 2020, Dated 21.10.2020, signed by Commissioner Ajeet Kumar Sahu, and which thus amends the recently-announced list of 2020 public holidays in the Union Territory of Ladakh (2020-03-20).
The Union Territory of Ladakh had already made its first independent declaration of a public holiday, on account of Guru Gobind Singh Ji's Birthday, earlier this year (2020-01-01), but at that time, the standing order for 2020 public holidays in Ladakh was still the Jammu and Kashmir Government Order No.251-JK(GAD) of 2019, Dated 27.12.2019 (2019-12-28).
Recall that, on October 31, 2019, the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir was split into 2, as the new Union Territory of Ladakh was carved out of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, in a manner similar to the creation of Telangana as the 29th state of India on June 2, 2014, having itself been carved-out the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh (2015-05-31).
The Union Territory of Ladakh Government Order No:88-LA(GAD) of 2020 goes on to state that "Public holiday under the Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881 shall be observed within the limits of Leh district on the date of Poll, as fixed i.e. on 22nd October 2020" and that "The Poll Day i.e. fixed on 22nd October 2020; shall also be declared as paid holiday to every person employed in any business, trade, Industrial undertakings or any other establishment entitled to Vote. Daily wager/ Casual Workers shall also be entitled for the holiday and wages on the poll day".
